Taylor Swift Announces New Album: Everything We Know

During the 66th annual Grammy awards Taylor Swift surprised fans with a brand new album entitled ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ coming out on April 19th. This is a big deal for fans and set the internet ablaze. Here’s what we know about Swift’s 11th studio album.

The announcement

Swift won the award for best Pop Vocal Album and during her acceptance speech took the opportunity to surprise her fans. “I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last 2 years, which is that my brand new album comes out April 19th.” This came as even more of a surprise to fans becase many believed Swift had been hinting at a ‘Reputation’ re-record. With snake details on her clothing, wearing lots of black, and it being one of two left in her ‘Taylor’s Version’ re-recording projects.

A single?

Swift posted a cryptic note that seems to be lyrics from the upcoming record. From the subject matter, it seems to be more ‘Folklore’ style rather than her iconic pop albums. In the note Swift writes, “And so I enter into evidence my tarnished coat of arms/ My muses acquired like bruises/ My talismans and charms/ the tick, tick, tick of love bombs my veins of pitch black ink” She ends the note with “All’s fair in love and poetry… Sincerely, The Chairman of The Tortured Poets society” These lyrics are definitely a shift from her previous album Midnights, a pop hook centered record.

The timeline

Swift said she had been keeping this album a secret for two years. Swift and her longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn split in April of last year, so these songs were likely written while with him, while on the rocks, and probably added to after the breakup. Swift has had a flashy year dating Matty Healy and now Travis Kelce, but has been seen leaving the recording studio consistently since her split with Alwyn. The melancholy nature of the lyrics hints to a sadder record, rather than the glamour of the media circus Swift has been apart of this past year.

The tracks

According to Swift’s website where the album is available to pre order, it says the album will have 16 tracks and one bonus track entitled “The Manuscript.” We can’t wait to listen on April 19th!
